Occultist Book Review

Occultist is a great book written by Oliver Mayes, this book was published on February 21st of this year. The book was published by Portal Books, a newer publishing company that so far deals strictly in the new LitRPG genre.

Damien is just your slightly above average teen. He loves to game and works hard at school to secure a future. He is a beta tester for a hyper-realistic virtual game called Saga Online. Instantly becoming a virtual world celebrity after appearing on the Saga Online show, he gets a fancy new VR headset sent to him complimentary of the makers of Saga. Other than his mother's health and adept gaming abilities nothing about him seems too much different. Until his mother collapses and is rushed to the hospital. Soon on the run from the equivalent to social services, Damien tries to save her doing what he does best. Gaming. If he enters the streamer competition and wins he will have enough to buy her what she needs to save her life. Except there is one problem, out of the beta testing Damien is now in the MMO version with other players and must start fresh with a new character. In six days, Damien has to rise to the top of the leader boards and take down the invincible Aetherius, a legend in the game. Soon after though he gets kicked to a boss floor, only to discover a secret class, the Occultist. Forced to embrace this new class and destroy the most powerful player known to all, it isn't going to be easy.

This book was great, it was at Project Chrysalis level (one of my top three books). The story was intriguing and there was a reason that he threw himself into the game, which is a problem I have with other LitRPGs if there isn't a reason for the obsession. I love the balance of real world and in-game problems, and I can't help but to love the great characters. One of my favorite things is the metaphors and jokes weaved into the story, they are just great and really make this book fun to read. This book is great for anyone who likes a story or fantasy/sci-fi theme even if you don't like games. The story is written in a way so anyone can understand anything happening within it. Definitely check this book out, it is worth it.
